10 Underrated Bands You Need to Listen to in 2019
As time goes on, I find myself listening to more and more bands that hardly anyone I know has ever even heard of. With pop punk being one of my favorite music genres, I decided to compile a list 10 of underrated bands to help gain them some exposure. If you know me, you’d know I love going to concerts, so I’m definitely adding some of these bands to my concert bucket list (some of them I’d love to see for the second or third time).
In a world full of music, we have the option to keep listening to the same artists we hear everyday, or diversify our taste and give lesser known artists a listen.
Here are 10 underrated bands you need to check out:
1. Sleep On It
This band has easily made their way to the top of my list. I’ve seen these guys open for State Champs (one of my favorite pop punk bands), and play their own set at Vans Warped Tour. I even recently joined their Street Team, because I wanted to spread the word about their music. Be sure to check out their latest album Overexposed, which includes “A New Way Home” (one of my favorite songs).
2. Boys of Fall
This band was a very close second on my list. I’ve seen these guys at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, and I would love to see them again on their upcoming tour in April (friends, hit me up if you want to go). I can’t get over their vocals and their mix of soft and heavy songs. I’ve had their latest album Better Moments on repeat since it was released last year. “No Good For Me” is also a favorite song of mine.
3. Carousel Kings
I had the opportunity to see these guys at the APMAs Fan Day in 2017. I had just discovered them, but they blew me away. Their album Charm City is full of songs to get stuck in your head. They’re also releasing new music in 2019, so be sure to watch out for that!
4. In Her Own Words
It’s embarrassing the number of times I’ve played “Silver Lights” by this band. I came across this song and instantly fell in love. I’ve yet to see this band live, but I’m definitely adding them to the list. They just released a single called “Serotonin” and it’s very good. I can’t wait to see what other new music they release.
5. Point North
I actually discovered this band 3 weeks ago. They had just released their newest EP Retrograde, and I easily became obsessed with the song “Gasoline.” This band easily stacks up to bands I’ve been listening to for quite a while. Their song “Hammer” is another one that won’t disappoint.
6. Simple Creatures
Out of every band on the list, this one is the newest group to form. The group is actually a duo comprised of Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth. The duo have released 2 songs to date, “Strange Love” and “Drug.” This group probably has the most unique sound on the list. I’m excited to hear what other music they’ll produce together, as their first EP Strange Love will be released March 29th.
7. Finding September
This band is unique in that it is the only female-fronted band on the list. My good friend Emily happens to be the lead singer. This band is also unique with the fact that the band is made up of very young talented musicians. If you live in or around the Texas area, be sure to check these guys out on their upcoming tour in March. Don’t forget to also check out their debut EP History (“Darkest Greys” is my favorite song off the EP).
8. We Were Sharks
This band headlined the same show where I saw Boys of Fall at the Hoosier Dome, but I didn’t know of We Were Sharks at the time. Their stage presence and overall energy grabbed my attention from the get-go. A lot of my local Indy friends were big fans of this band and I quickly understood what the hype was all about. Be sure to check out their latest album Lost Touch.
9. The Gospel Youth
This is one of those bands that I discovered by accident on Spotify (you know, when your playlist ends and it starts playing similar songs you may like). Well, that actually happened with quite a few of their songs, until I looked them up and realized they were the same band playing all these different songs I liked. Their song “Kids” is one of my absolute favorites, despite it not making it to their Top 5 on Spotify. Be sure to check out their latest single “Thoughtless” and keep an eye out for other new releases!
10. Oh, Weatherly
This band I had seen a lot of people talk about on Twitter, but I had never heard any of their music. One day, I decided to look their music up and I fell in love with the song “Get It Right.” I finally realized what the hype I saw online was all about. Be sure to check out their latest album “Lips Like Oxygen” that they released last year. Remember that Boys of Fall tour I mentioned earlier? This band will be playing that same tour!
To be convenient, I’ve created a Spotify playlist that features every artist on this list. Be sure to check it out below:
