Why I'm Joining the 30-Day Minimalism Game
Minimalism is something that has peaked my interest for a couple years now. I’ve read Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, I’ve watched her Netflix series, I’ve read numerous blog posts on the subject, and I’ve even written a few of my own. I’ll admit, I’m nowhere near what most would call a “minimalist.” I still own too much stuff, but I’m constantly trying to declutter and minimize my space.
Now, you may be wondering, “What is the 30-Day Minimalism Game?” I stumbled across this game on a random blog, and found out it is a challenge created by the Minimalists. The game is to spend 30 days decluttering your home or space. You declutter one item on Day 1, two items on Day 2, and keep going until you’ve decluttered 30 items on Day 30. If you make it to the end, the number of items you will have decluttered is 465.
The Minimalists recommend finding someone to compete with and see who can make it the furthest. If you both make it to the end, then you both win and have completed the challenge! I have asked my mom to join the challenge with me. Hi, mom! 👋
I recently moved out into my own apartment, and even though I decluttered before the move, I still have so much stuff (my boyfriend would agree considering I’m using up half of his unused closet 😅). I think some areas are a little too cluttered, so I want to keep working on the space to get it where I want it.
I aspire to have a cute apartment like one you would see on Pinterest, but it’s going to take some work to get there. Some people aspire to have a pretty empty apartment, but I just want to get rid of the things that are taking up space and no longer make me happy. I like Marie Kondo’s take on minimalism because you are allowed to keep things that spark joy.
According to the Minimalists, the rules state that you must get rid of your items by the end of the day, but I think that is a little excessive. Anything that needs to be donated will be collected until the end, or until I have an overflowing number of things that need dropped off. I also know that life can get busy, so I’m going to give myself the freedom to take skip days as long as I get caught up on the weekend.
A few other rules… the things that I get rid of must be things that I’ve held on to, therefore trash doesn’t count. Also, anything that comes in a pair like socks or shoes will only be counted as one item instead of two.
My mom and I are going to be starting the challenge on February 1st. I’ll be doing another blog post when the month is over to document my progress. If you want to get inspiration and see what other people are decluttering, check out the hashtag #MinsGame. I hope to inspire other people to join in on the Minimalism Game.
Are you going to take on the challenge?
Until next time,
